Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container (FIBC)

A Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container (FIBC)—commonly called a bulk bag, jumbo bag, or super sack—is a large, flexible packaging container designed to store and transport dry, flowable materials safely and efficiently. FIBCs are widely used across chemicals, agriculture, mining, food, construction, and logistics.

What an FIBC is made of

Most FIBCs are manufactured from woven polypropylene (PP) fabric. Depending on the application, they can include liners, coatings, conductive threads, reinforced lifting loops, and discharge spouts to suit different materials and handling systems.

Typical capacity & handling

  • Load range: commonly from several hundred kilograms up to heavy industrial loads
  • Handling: forklift tines or cranes via lifting loops
  • Storage: stackable and space-efficient; fold flat when empty

Main types of FIBCs

Choosing the right type is critical—especially in hazardous or dusty environments.

  • Type A – Standard PP bags for non-flammable products
  • Type B – Reduces static discharge risk (not suitable for flammable atmospheres)
  • Type C (Conductive) – Must be grounded during filling/emptying; used for flammable powders
  • Type D (Static-dissipative) – Dissipates static without grounding
  • Baffle (Q-bags) – Internal panels help the bag keep a square shape for better space use

Common applications

  • Chemicals: powders, resins, additives, catalysts
  • Agriculture: fertilisers, seeds, grains, animal feed
  • Mining & minerals: sand, ore concentrates, additives
  • Food & pharma: sugar, flour, starches (food-grade versions)
  • Construction: cement, lime, dry mixes

Key advantages

  • High load capacity with low packaging weight
  • Cost-effective transport and storage
  • Customisable for safety, flow control, and product protection
  • Reusable and recyclable options available

Safety & compliance notes

  • Hazardous materials may require UN-certified FIBCs
  • Static-sensitive products need the correct Type B, C, or D bag
  • Regular inspection of seams, loops, and fabric is essential
